Whether you want to build a light saber for yourself or with a child, I hope this site can provide all the tools and information you need to do so. Please leave a comment if you have any questions about the project, or just to show what you’ve worked on!
It is an excellent project to learn how electronics work and it lets kids (and adults) take control of making their own toys. Making your own lightsaber, shows that lightsabers, like any object that can be bought, can be made by people. They don’t have to come from the magical toy factory. If it can be thought of, it can be made. As simple a lesson as this is, I think it’s a powerful one, and an empowering one. This idea that the objects around us are ones that we can understand, change, make, and make better is a huge one, and it’s one that I think kids (and adults) get when they make things like lightsabers. It also allows them to understand how they would fix it if it broke, or even to think about how they could modify it, if they wanted something a little different.
The instructions for the kit were posted at instructables.com. These instructions have received 5 out of 5 stars (45 ratings) and have been viewed over 225,000 times. View a pdf of the instructions here Make-your-own-lightsaber. I’ve also been working on a kit containing the instructions and all the parts for $40. If you have any interest in purchasing the kit, send me an email and I can send you an order form through google checkout.
